• What is N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine?

  NAC is the N-acetyl derivative of L-Cysteine, a sulphur-containing amino acid naturally present in the body and in protein-containing foods. Adding an acetyl group produces N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, a stable form widely used in nutritional supplements. NAC should not be confused with L-Cysteine itself. Although closely related, they are distinct compounds.

  The body naturally produces glutathione from three amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid. Cysteine can be a limiting component in this process. NAC provides a supplemental source of N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine from which cysteine can be made available to the body. • Why does NAC smell of sulphur?

  A distinctive smell when opening a bottle of NAC is completely normal. NAC contains sulphur as part of its molecular structure and naturally has a characteristic sulphur-like odour, which some people describe as similar to eggs.
