What Is Myo-Inositol?
Inositol is a naturally occurring carbohydrate-like compound that exists in several different structural forms known as isomers. These include Myo-Inositol, D-Chiro-Inositol and several other forms.
Myo-Inositol is the predominant naturally occurring form and is the form used in this Health Leads supplement.
It occurs naturally within the body as well as in foods including fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
Is Myo-Inositol Vitamin B8?
Myo-Inositol is sometimes referred to as Vitamin B8, particularly in older nutritional literature. However, it is not officially recognised as a vitamin.
True vitamins are nutrients that generally need to be obtained through the diet because the body cannot produce sufficient quantities itself. The human body can synthesise Myo-Inositol from glucose, which is why it does not meet the formal definition of a vitamin.
The name Vitamin B8 nevertheless remains commonly associated with inositol.
